Things we learned on our Hike
If you are lost in the woods you blow your whistle in groups of 3.

Pine Trees
1- The branches grow in a wagon wheel format on White Pines. Each wagon
wheel denotes a year of growth for a tree. So 15 wagon wheels is 15 year
old
2- White Pine has clusters of 5 pine needles. W-H-I-T-E is 5 letters, so
it's easy to remember
3- Pitch Pine has clusters of 3 needles. Remembering Pitching like
baseball, 3 strikes your out.
4- Red Pine has clusters of 2 needles.
Things to have in your backpack or be wearing for a hike

2- Matches for signal smoke (Bears and up)
3- snack (trail mix)

5- Pocket knife (if you earned your Whittling Chip Card)
6- Compass/map
7- Poncho
8- Flashlight
9- First Aid Kit
10- Bug Spray/sunscreen
11- Extra Clothing to match the weather/appropriate shoes
Great Job picking up all the trash and practicing Leave No Trace!
Signs on a hiking trail
Remember to check the signs on your trail. It will show you where you are
going and what the rules are for that trail.
Berries
White and yellow, kill a fellow.
Purple and blue, good
for you.
Red... could be good, could be dead.
If [red berries are] growing in little clusters, they're
probably not good. If they're growing in little singletons, they probably are
good. Best though to go with not good. Kids will not remember the BUTS... of
the song so we stick to Red your dead.
(the only exception is pokeweed--- it is poisonous and is
best to memorize what it looks like)
